On February 5th, during the anniversary of the Mexican Constitution, the government announced the Mexico 2021 Celebrations.  The celebrations are going to be related to two major events of Mexican history: the foundation of Mexico-Tenochtitlán (Mexico City) and the Independence of Mexico.

The Aztecs, also called Mexicas, settled Mexico-Tenochtitlan seven centuries ago, in fact, in 1325. Mexico got independence from Spain in 1821, two centuries ago. Throughout the year, it is planned to have several celebrations and expositions in Mexico and around the world.

Some of the most important celebrations will be:

The death anniversary of Vicente Guerrero, who is a hero from the independence; and was the person who achieved the agreement of the independence.

The death anniversary of Ramon Lopez Velarde, who was a Mexican poet, called “The National Poet.”

The birth anniversary of Simón Bolivar, who is called “The Spanish Liberator.” Bolivar was a Venezuelan soldier who led the revolutions against Spanish in South America.

The birth anniversary of Jose Maria Morelos y Pavon, who is another hero from the independence of Mexico. Morelos was a Catholic priest who fought for the liberty of indigenous people. He is called “Siervo de la Nacion,” Servant of the Nation; he commanded the second half of the independence war.

Moreover, some ceremonies will take place to apologize and ask for forgiveness to Maya and Yaqui communities because of the abuse during and after the colony.

Mexico City

Mexico City will have festivities and parades in Downtown, Lago de Texcoco and Xochimilco. According to the Aztec legend, the Mexica people were shown a vision of an eagle perched on a prickly pear cactus, eating a snake. The vision indicated the place where they should build their city. Therefore, the Mexica founded Mexico-Tenochtitlan on a small swampy island in Texcoco Lake, the inland lake of the Basin of Mexico City.

Two symbols are remaining from the Aztec time, which are Xochimilco and Lago de Texcoco (Texcoco Lake). Xochimilco is a town in southern Mexico City where you can get a trip by canoes as the Aztecs did. And, there is a project to rebuild the abandoned Lago de Texcoco, the project is going to make the lake in one of the biggest sustainable parks in the world.
